This photograph was taken in the early 1920s. Note the wreath with the letters 9 RDF. These letters stand for the 9th Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

435 men of the 9th Dubs were killed in the Great War. One of their most famous members was the Irish Nationalist MP and poet, Lieut. Tom Kettle. He was killed in action on the 9th of September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. Before he died, he wrote a poem to his only daughter Betty, whom he never saw. Betty died in December 1996. A statue of Tom can be seen in St. Stephen's Green, Dublin.
